Calamity E2 in brief
Picking up the instant episode one ended, the Ring of Brass spends a single night unraveling the rot beneath Avalir on the eve of the Replenishment. Cerrit’s dead assassin proves to be a “K’nauth” — a Betrayer’s puppet-cleric drawing power that should be impossible — made two weeks ago, exactly when the vanished Archmage Vespin Chloras worked his ritual. Threads converge fast: the Arboreal Calix that pays the city’s secret Drashari Tithe is built to cage Avalir’s hidden Tree of Names, the same blossoming tree from Zerxus’s nightmare that sickened his dead husband Evandrin; a nine-year-old recording catches Vespin, Dean Lacrytia Hollow, and the archmage-apprentice Loras conspiring; and the Oracles of the Hall of Prophecy all went mad the same night, save Sofyra, while Volucia of the Ring of Gold broke her staff, renounced magic, and fled. Meanwhile Laerryn, with Nydas’s stolen war-constructs, brings her Astral Leywright to life — proving she can move the entire city to another plane, the ultimate refusal of the gods. Patia and Laerryn kill the traitor Magister Cormorant (the leak who was inviting things in); Loquatius out-deceives even Cerrit to bury something about Evandrin; and Zerxus follows a dying god through a mirror to meet the Lord of the Hells, who wears Evandrin’s face, tells the Betrayers’ tragic origin, and warns that Zerxus is being lied to — by no god, but by his own city. Unresolved: a true prophecy of Avalir’s fall, declared false because it “can’t be true”; the Helmswoman murdered mid-descent; and the whole Ring of Brass ambushed at the helm by Hollow and her crow keepers. The night the heroes tried to save Avalir is the night they help doom it.
