C1 E5 in brief
The party squeezes their captive duergar general before letting him “go”: Kima was taken to King Murghol at the fortress Emberhold, likely broken in its dungeons; K’varn is a levitating, all-seeing horror with a single black horn of concentrated evil; and a lava-hidden tunnel is a secret way in. When the general breaks his bargain and flees, Clarota devours his brain. The camp wakes, and the escape turns catastrophic — the overloaded flying carpet fails, dropping the party through a hail of javelins; Keyleth falls from her eagle form, Grog craters, Percy slips to a death save — but they keep the oath the general broke, dragging a ballista-skewered Clarota to safety and sealing the pursuit behind a wall of stone. Following Kima’s trail down past her abduction site, Pike shares her full divine vision — K’varn’s horn of “soul matter” and the road through Emberhold to the illithid city of Yug’Voril, where the Elder Brain is held. Deeper in the lava country, a trip-rope ambush on two cart-hauling ogres backfires: a stray explosive arrow looses a caged acid ooze that splits under lightning and eats anyone who strikes it, and hook horrors drop from the ceiling. The party improvises around it — fire, lava, telekinetic throws, a dominated hook horror — surviving acid that drops Grog before Keyleth ends it. Then the bitter twist: the tunnel loops straight back to where they began, the whole brutal detour a wasted circle past the lurking aboleth, redeemed only by recovering the abandoned Trinket. Battered, half-naked, and a day lost, they finally set onto the true path — the lava river from Pike’s vision, toward Emberhold and Kima.
